POSITION:

Be the sole counsel focusing on aboriginal matters, with the support of 2 senior counsels in the team, when needed, one of them being the GC. You will be interfacing with the Director of First Nations and Metis Affairs.

TERM:
Permanent position.

CANDIDATE:
You are knowledgeable and able to draft, negotiate, and advise in several of the following areas:

  1. the Indian Act and aboriginal rights;
  2. treaties between Canada and various First Nations (“FN”), and treaty rights;
  3. First Nations issues and perceptions
  4. ability to negotiate the permits or rights on reserves, and document the MOUs and transfer agreement based on an understanding of rights and permits granted in the past
  5. government’s duty to consult FN and how to advise on the protocol and delegation of those duties and the nature of accommodations granted in the past
  6. negotiations with FN concerning land claims
  7. general FN advice.

COMPENSATION AND START:
Competitive compensation, commensurate with experience plus free single health and dental benefits from Advocate.

To start immediately. Salary will depend greatly on year of call, and experience. There’s also a possible bonus each year .
